Can you get car finance without a driving licence?

Whether you’re learning how to drive or simply figuring out your options, you’ve probably been wondering how car financing works without a full driving licence.
It’s a question we’ve been asked frequently here at Concept Car Credit by first-time drivers. In this guide, we’ll talk through what’s possible, what isn’t, and what steps you can take to get a car finance agreement that suits you.
Can you get car finance without a driving licence?
In the UK, you need a full UK or EU driver’s licence to get car finance. Most finance brokers and lenders – including us here at Concept Car Credit – require this to ensure the agreement is safe, legal, and insurable.
While we work with as many people as possible, we can currently only offer car finance to those with a full UK or European licence.
Can you get car finance with a provisional licence?
As a provisional licence isn’t a full one, you won’t be eligible for car finance at Concept Car Credit.
If you have a provisional licence, we can assume you’re on the road to passing your test and are looking into options for when you can purchase your first car.
Some companies may offer car finance to those with a provisional licence, but these are likely to come with stricter conditions, including needing guarantors, hard credit searches, and large deposits.
Why is a full driving licence required for car finance?
Insurance: Different insurance types are offered based on licence types, and many insurers won’t cover learners on financed vehicles.
Legal responsibility: Full eligibility is required to drive a financed car, as you will be the legal keeper of the vehicle.
Risk management: As lenders and finance brokers are essentially letting you borrow a car until you pay it off, they need to make sure there is little risk involved. If the applicant can’t legally drive yet, there is a higher chance of damage.
I don’t have a driving licence. What are my car finance options?
If you don’t have a full driver’s licence yet, don’t worry. There are a few things you can do to increase your chances of being accepted the first time when you apply for car finance.
Pass your driving test
Focus on getting your full licence before anything. Once you get a full UK or EU driver’s licence, the doors will open for your independence, with more finance and vehicle options.
Build on your credit score
While Concept Car Credit offers car finance for bad credit, this time is a great opportunity to build on your credit score.
To practice for your test and to get familiar with the roads, ask about insuring yourself on a friend or family member’s insurance as a named driver until you are fully licensed.
This shows potential lenders and brokers that you have experience driving a car other than the one you learnt in.
